Why go to pharmacy school? After graduating and actually becoming a pharmacist, here are my top 10 reasons that anyone should go to pharmacy school! (In no particular order)
- The job market right now. Though when I started pharmacy school the job market was very saturated, changes in the field of pharmacy mean that sign on bonuses are once more a thing for many new graduates, and there are many community pharmacies in particular that are desperate for pharmacist workforce!
- You get a doctorate degree. Having the highest level of education and the word “Dr” before your last name is pretty cool!
- There are so many career options. Being a pharmacist is a lot more than what most people picture, counting pills behind a counter. From industry, to clinical pharmacy in a hospital, to pharmacy association management, there’s so many options for a career in pharmacy!
- Make a difference for patients. Being able to help people in some of the hardest moments of their lives as a pharmacist is extremely rewarding.
- Useful hands on skills. Pharmacists can give immunizations, check blood pressure and glucose, and administer injectable medications, and compounding customizable medications. All these hands on skills are something that you will carry with you no matter what your chosen specialty.
- Entrepreneurship options abound! Whether owning a pharmacy or being a consultant, if you’re interested in being an entrepreneur, being a pharmacist is a great way to start.
- Work on a multi disciplinary team with other healthcare professionals. Being a part of the healthcare team in order to take better care of patients is a unique experience.
- There’s so many chances to get involved in professional associations. The networking opportunities, traveling for conferences, and leadership skill building are endless within professional pharmacy associations.
- Use your scientific brains. For those of you who have always loved chemistry and math, you get to apply those subjects to useful knowledge on drug mechanisms and pharmacy concepts.
- Least important–money! Pharmacists can usually expect a six-figure salary post-graduation, which is a very respectable wage. But don’t be motivated by money, the student loans are also pretty hefty in most cases.
