I finished up the second and final day of the PCCA veterinary compounding bootcamp in Houston, Texas today! As usual, I left the PCCA headquarters feeling inspired and even more knowledgeable about compounding. This morning, after a quick round of kahoot testing our knowledge, we compounded oat based treats for horses.
We followed that with a chicken flavored oil suspension. Oil as opposed to water suspensions are used to extend the beyond use date.
And an oral paste typically used for horses.
Then we made an oral syrup used for birds. I flavored mine tutti fruit watermelon. We also made an apple flavored oral powder, which we then got to heat seal using some special equipment.
After filming a quick testimonial video about my amazing experience with PCCA thus far, and a quick lunch, we were back to the lab for our final formula. The last compound was a lipoderm transdermal cream. We used an EMP (electronic mortar and pestle) and ointment mill (used to reduce particle size), and added some fun color as well.
We also added some color to the poloxamer gel that we started yesterday. It is liquid when refrigerated and gel at room temperature.
We finished out the afternoon with an animal encounter and presentation from Chris Simmons, a pharmacist who has been working to provide unique animal medications for years.
I learned so much and cannot wait to be back at PCCA for the advanced compounding bootcamp next year!
