5/30/19
I made the trip back to Houston, Texas, home of PCCA (Professional Compounding Centers of America) yesterday to participate in the lab portion of the veterinary compounding course. I came to the PCCA headquarters for the introductory compounding bootcamp in December and absolutely fell in love with compounding! I took a PCCA BHRT (bioidentical hormone replacement therapy) online course during the beginning of 2019, and the veterinary course offers an online course as well that I took over the past semester.
Today we had a combination of presentations, discussion, and time in the lab to learn new compounding skills specific to animals. We first started with an overview of anatomy, physiology, and toxicities of various animal species, and then learned about the some of the regulatory considerations for compounders.
We then made chicken flavored animal treats.
After a quick lunch, we were back in the classroom hearing dozens of cases that PCCA has handled for pharmacists caring for veterinary patients. Then we made bacon flavored capsules.
Next was peanut butter chewable troches.
We finished with a polyox bandage and poloxamer 30% gel, both great for wound care for animals.
I can’t wait for day 2!
